The ask was to extend Google’s brand style into a new guide template that communicated how the Google family of products can serve as a robust toolbox for the unique needs of small businesses, specifically those with a long tail business strategy. In the first phase (visual concepting), I explored different narratives: a literal “toolbox” metaphor, the overwhelming process of running a small business, local pride in the small business community, even the ever-present survival story of David vs. Goliath. Phase two meant running with the client select, carrying it over into all the usual elements of a reusable template, and then applying it to a loose outline and sample content.
